PCPdirect online service for the treatment for male pattern baldness
This service has been developed for use by men only. Women suffering the symptoms of alopecia (baldness) should seek treatment from their own doctor.
Who can use this service?
The service is available to men only who have the symptoms of male pattern baldness, who are aged over 21 years. Overseas purchasers may be restricted by legislation in their own country.
How the service works
The following information is provided for you to determine whether you have the symptoms of male pattern baldness. Should you consider that this is the case you will then be given options of treatment, this includes links to proprietary products marketed for baldness and the opportunity to participate in an online consultation to see whether the online GP considers treatment is appropriate.
If the online GP decides treatment is appropriate our service will allow you to purchase up to 6 months supply of medication; either in one go or in installments up to six months. After this period you will need to participate in another online consultation to receive more .
What are the symptoms of male pattern baldness?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of the hair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hair line and/or balding on the top of the head. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and a particular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone)
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair. This leads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their 20's and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a long period of time, the hair may be permanently lost. Drugs such as finasteride lower the levels of DHT in the scalp. This helps reverse the balding process, leading to an increased hair growth and prevention of further hair loss.
You should not take finasteride (Propecia) if:
- You are a woman
- You are allergic to finasteride
- You are taking finasteride or dutasteride for BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
- If your symptoms are sudden and associated with other symptoms
- You are under 21 years of age.
