Reasons for giving up

Everyone knows that smoking can be harmful but just how bad is it? Well smoking is the biggest single cause of illness and premature death in the U.K. 120,000 people each year die from smoking related illness, compared to just 5000 people who die from road accidents. So in just one day 312 people will die of a smoking related disease!

Are you going to be one of them?

It’s not too late, even if you have smoked for years you can still benefit from giving up and the longer you give up the better it will become. Giving up for just one day will reduce your chances of a heart attack; give up for a week and you will exercise better; give up for 3 months and your breathing improves. If you give up for 5 years your chances of suffering a heart attack are 50% less than when you smoked!

So there you are , it’s never too late!

Giving up

There are lots of ways to stop smoking and there are lots of services out there to help you on your way. Your first step should be the NHS smoking help line on 0800 1690169. They have specially trained staff who can help you with options from group therapy to one-to-one help.

PCPdirect.co.uk works with pharmacies that are able to offer this one-to-one support. So how does it work?

Some pharmacies are able to offer nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and counselling to give up smoking. On your initial visit you can discuss your needs and your aims. The staff are fully trained and able to offer motivational support and suitable products to help you achieve your goal. Your achievements each week can be measured using a smokalyzer machine which measures your carbon monoxide levels ( All you need to do is blow into the machine to obtain a reading , it’s quite painless!)

The service may be supported by the local PCT (Primary Care Trust) and instead of paying full price for NRT you may purchase them for the price of a prescription (quantity will vary depending on scheme.). If you do not pay for your prescriptions you may get your patches free (subject to status) for the duration of the program. Ask for more details when you visit your pharmacy.

So now you know how to start let’s get you started!
